Feet step mournfully down the dirt road
A sad funeral queue dressed in white
Mother India has been widowed

Gandhiji has been cut down cruelly
Though he died gallantly, at the best
Being mourned by all whose lives he had touched

Sad feet crunch through white flowers on the road
All sounds are hushed, save for weeping
And women singing somber bhajans

A droning herd of devotees
Marching forward with downcast faces
Paying tribute to India’s bapu

He fought hard for his country’s freedom
And won over his “children” forever

Never the ruler of his nation
But obeyed by all who lives he blessed
A king in the eyes of his people

A funny old fellow, dressed in rags
Brimming with wisdom and inner strength
As he tottered his way passed tyrants

A caravan carries his sleeping form
Slowly trudging toward his funeral pyre
To deliver a saint to Heaven

As Krishna saved Govardhan from Indra
Bapuji lifted his people high
Forever earning his country’s praises

Though the Mahatma died long ago
His memory lives on with his “children”

Long live the Mahatma

Long live Gandhiji.

The meter was the duplicated one of Raghupati Raghava Raja Ram, a devotional song to Rama and the favorite bhajan of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi.

My poem was written in tribute to Gandhi's death, still hitting me hard even though I'd never met him, and I wasn't alive during his time. He is an inspiration to me, and I look to him for a guiding phrase whenever I let my anger take me away. He always brings me back.

Enjoy. Namaskar.

Good one, written with emotion. Stanza 7 :I think it should read ' as he tottered his way past tyrants"

Ah, that good ol' grammar mistake. You know, someone told me about that forever ago and I never got around to fixing it. Probably won't for a while.

Good Lord, Linds, Your boundless empathy for people and countries you cannot see astounds me.

I agree with BlueSpartanOfVGC... the "Mother India has been widowed" really got me. I had to stop and think about it a second and then I thought, aw wow. That's a really clever way to put that!

Wonderful as always. =3

That's the best form of empathy, though, eh? Understanding those who you can't help or see for yourself; it makes you empathize for them even more. ^_^

And, yes, I enjoyed writing that line. Gandhi was called Bapu (father--Baba is another way to say it) by his followers, and I though--"well, he's a father to his people. Then there's Mother India. I'll say they were metaphorically husband and wife."

Thank you very much, I'm glad you like it.
